We’ve run 2 Sahara retreats now and they were both amazing experiences. We expected everyone to be overwhelmed by the beauty of the desert and to find time for reflection, to reconsider where their lives were going – what we didn’t expect was the almost-instant sense of community that emerged in the desert and the long-lasting friendships that were formed between those who came.

This year we’re putting a particular focus on mindfulness and meditation.

If you’ve ever tried to meditate but found it hard to keep your attention in the here and now in the rush of your daily routine, in the Sahara there can be such stillness and quiet that you can hear your own blood as it flows around your body. With no cell phones or internet you can tune into your original rhythm and experience the joy of being alive.

Sound too hippie? Don’t worry, the retreat is also a place to learn some aikido and dance expression, tell travel stories around the fire and make some music with interesting people from around the world. Either way you’ll be blown away by the majestic dunes, the brightness of the stars in the desert and the magic of the Sahara.

Despite being a beautiful country, somehow Bulgaria didn’t seem to call people and long term we decided it would be much more fun to live next to a beach while we grow the project. We also has a psychopathic landlord in Bulgaria but that’s another story…

So for the moment the Oasis is closed while we look for a new location in Greece. To stay tuned either sign up for the newsletter or the facebook group and we’ll let you know about future developments.

Meanwhile this is that the Oasis looked like this year through the eyes of one attendee!

Storytelling in Berlin

Here are some of my latest stories to listen to as you’re falling asleep, on a bus or just in the mood for a bit of imaginative storytelling. Storytelling is just one of the things we do at the Oasis!

Guy will be sharing much experience and knowledge of art history and different ideas, techniques and materials. We will try to ask ourselves relevant questions in order to figure simple matters as what attracts me, why do I paint and where does this force come from?

Who hasn’t asked themselves the question? And yet where do you start to look for answers?

Master of philosophy, Lucian Cosinchi, will be guiding us through a week of forest hiking and philosophy as we get to grips with the challenge of thinking about the really big questions in life:

How do we know what we know?

Is there any such thing as Truth? Beauty? Right?

Lucian will introduce us to some of the principles of philosophy and we will flesh out the themes as we walk through the beautiful autumn forest surrounding the Oasis, tackling themes individually and in small groups. We will trek through the hills and have lunches by the lake as we share our thoughts and explore new perspectives.

If living is an art, then finding meaning is a work of construction, and each of us will end the week with a new outlook on the world and our lives.

For to look for the Answer, as Douglas Adams observed, you have to understand the question first…

Taking us into the heart of nature

In her own words:

“I’m an ‘under the tree, nose in the pollen, face on the ground’ sort of teacher. I believe in using all our senses to learn and to remember, to create intimate connections with nature, plants,life in general.We wil smell the pungent, earthy perfumes. caress the gentle duvet or the prickly edges of leaves. Tasting and exploring textures and savouring subtle nuances. By becoming aware of the riches of nature ,we are gifted a greater freedom .In learning the plants that nourrish us and heal us,we offer ourselves a life changing experience. In less poetic terms,we will learn how to identify,gather and process the plants that we will find around the “Road Junky Oasis’ in October.”

Reaching for the sky

To complement the afternoon drama, Emily will also be teaching the basics of tai chi in the mornings to cultivate balance and inner awareness – qualities that will ground and consolidate your acting later in the day. There may also be other spontaneous activites as we go walking through the woods in the moonlight…

We’re going to invite traveling  musicians to come along and jam with local ones as all kinds of eclectic musical backgrounds blend with Balkan tunes around the fire. The musicians will only get fed if there’s music around the clock so expect a week of dancing and singing your heart out.

Other activities for the week will include:

- freestyle dance jams in the morning

- Tom Thumb will be giving an evening of storytelling

- we’ll camp one night by the nearby lake to swim with sunrise

- marathon pizza parties around our earth oven

- general fun and games

Vanda Jones will be showing us how to do that and will also open us up to a new relationship with nature, awakening our senses as in the hunter-gatherer days of old.

Most of us imagine we can’t sing, having been told so when we were young. Thus when we  open our mouths to join in a song it’s with tension and effort. But each of us has a unique voice once we learn to relax and reconnect with our breath so that singing takes as much effort as a good yawn.

Pavel will take us into the forest to make music with the trees and insects, awakening our ears to the sounds of nature and the inspiration it can give us. We will work through the week individually and in groups to build a choir for the finale on the Friday evening.

You don’t need any musical background or to have sung before – come and discover your natural voice!
